Photos of the Matterhorn and Zermatt

The Matterhorn is one of the most famous mountains in the world and a symbol of Switzerland. It is located in the Alps, on the border between Switzerland and Italy, and is one of the highest mountains in the Alps, reaching a height of 4,478 meters.

The Matterhorn has a long and eventful history. It was first climbed by a British expedition in 1865, which ended in four deaths. Since then, thousands of mountaineers have attempted to reach the summit, but climbing the Matterhorn is still considered one of the most difficult and dangerous mountaineering expeditions in the world.

The Matterhorn is not only a popular destination for experienced mountaineers, but also a favorite tourist destination. There are numerous ways to experience the Matterhorn, including hiking, ski touring, and heli-skiing.

The Matterhorn is also a popular motif in art and literature. It has featured in numerous paintings, photographs, and books, and is depicted on the reverse of Swiss franc coins. There are also numerous museums and exhibitions dedicated to the Matterhorn, including the Matterhorn Museum in Zermatt and the Alpine Museum in Visp.

A particular highlight is the Tour de Matterhorn, a multi-day hike through the breathtaking landscape of Valais. The tour begins in Zermatt and leads through the Mattertal valley, past glaciers, mountain peaks, and picturesque villages. There is also the option to stay overnight in mountain huts and experience the traditional culture of the Valais region.

Although the Matterhorn is a popular tourist destination, visitors should always remember that it is a dangerous and challenging mountain. It is important to be well-prepared and to follow the instructions of experienced guides to ensure that one can fully enjoy the beauty of the Matterhorn.
