Photos of Gelterkinden in the canton of Basel-Landschaft

Gelterkinden, Basel-Landschaft

Archaeological finds indicate that the Gelterkinden area was continuously inhabited from the Neolithic period to the Middle Ages . From the late Early Middle Ages onward, a church dedicated to the Apostle Peter stood above the village. At the foot of the church hill was the Hennenbühlhof estate, which belonged to the Counts of Frohburg and was granted to the Lords of Gelterkinden. Later, it passed to the Counts of Thierstein , who sold it, along with the right of patronage, to the Teutonic Knights' house at Beuggen Castle in 1399. Other properties in Gelterkinden were also owned by St. Alban's Abbey , St. Leonard's Collegiate Church, the Cathedral Chapter , and various secular lords. In 1461, the city of Basel acquired Gelterkinden along with the Lordship of Farnsburg . Farnsburg Castle, from where Basel bailiffs governed the district for more than 300 years, was set on fire by revolutionaries in 1798. During the turmoil surrounding the separation of the cantons in 1832/33, Gelterkinden remained loyal to the city of Basel and requested Basel troops for its protection. In response, local farmers stormed the village ( the Gelterkinden Storm of April 1832) and drove out the Basel troops. Thus, Gelterkinden finally became part of the newly founded canton of Basel-Landschaft . In 1864, Gelterkinden boasted 290 passementerie looms and two silk ribbon factories. Since the Hauenstein line of the Central Railway bypassed Gelterkinden, the Sissach-Gelterkinden tramway operated between Sissach and the village from 1891 to 1916. However, the Schafmatt Railway project to Aarau failed. The opening of the Hauenstein Base Line in 1916 then brought further prosperity to the village.

The place name is first documented in 1102 or 1103 as Gelterkingen. Its meaning is "at the farms of Gelterich's people." The original place name suffix -ingen was hypercorrectly transformed by later scribes into -inden, in a false analogy to the chancery language rendering of the (former) dialectal ng in words like Ching, finge als Kind, finden.
