The Ankenballen - a striking rocky outcrop in the Swiss Belchen region

The Ankenballen is located in the immediate vicinity of the Belchenfluh. This striking rock formation stands within the municipality of Langenbruck. This scene is also a popular subject for photographers, especially in autumn when the fog from the Unterer Hauenstein envelops the two rocks.

The Legend of the Butter Balls: Long ago, in the area of Chilchzimmer, lived a wealthy dairyman. His lush alpine pastures grazed with magnificent herds of cattle, and his yield of butter and cheese was abundant. However, the dairyman was possessed by avarice, and during a period of high prices, he skimmed the milk before making cheese. He sold the low-fat cheese at exorbitant prices. But he hoarded the butter until its price rose even higher. However, the year of high prices was followed by prosperous years, and the greedy dairyman was cheated out of his profits, for no one wanted to buy his butter. Thus, the stumps remained and, over time, turned to stone, becoming the Butter Balls Crag.
