Kingfisher in the canton of Basel-Landschaft

The kingfisher is a rare and impressive animal native to Switzerland. With its vibrant blue and green plumage, it is a stunning sight and a popular target for birdwatchers.

The kingfisher is a small but sturdy bird found in Europe, Asia, and North Africa. It reaches a body length of about 20 cm and weighs approximately 35 g. It is most easily identified by its bright blue back and wing feathers and its green head.

The kingfisher prefers freshwater habitats such as rivers, streams, ponds, and lakes. It feeds mainly on small aquatic animals like insect larvae, worms, and fish. It is an active hunter and often dives into the water to catch its prey.

In Switzerland, the kingfisher is native to the Alps and the Jura Mountains. However, it also occurs at lower elevations, particularly in areas with numerous bodies of water. Overall, however, the populations in Switzerland are very small and endangered.

The kingfisher is a rare and protected bird whose population has declined sharply in recent decades. The reasons for this are manifold, including the loss of natural habitats, water pollution, the spread of invasive weeds, and changes in the water cycle.

To preserve and promote the kingfisher population, various conservation measures are in place in Switzerland. Some of these are:

  • Conservation and restoration of habitats

  • Protection of nesting and breeding sites

  • Regulation of water use and quality

  • Researching inventory trends and creating management plans

  • Public relations and educational programs to raise awareness for the protection of the kingfisher.

The kingfisher is a special and impressive bird whose beauty and behavior attract the attention of many people. Its protection and conservation are of utmost importance.
