Chamois in the Swiss Belchen region

In 1959 and 1960, 12 chamois – 4 bucks, 5 does, and 3 yearlings – were released in the Gerstel area of Waldenburg, Basel-Landschaft. The animals originated from the protected areas of Justistal, Kiental, and Urbachtal in the Bernese Oberland. The Gerstel-Rehhag-Geissfluh area, chosen for the release, fulfilled all the requirements for establishing a colony, offering rocks, scree slopes, wooded scree slopes, pastures, and water. At an altitude between 600 and 1120 meters above sea level, the sharp ridge stretches from Waldenburg to the Lauchfluh in a west-east direction, then turns southeast, reaching its highest point in the Belchen area on the border between the cantons of Basel-Landschaft and Solothurn. Steep rock faces and scree slopes facing south, north, and east are distributed across the entire area over a length of approximately 4 kilometers. An ideal habitat for chamois.
